Zigzag City.

ZigZagCity is a route through the city centre connecting a wide range of locations. Well-known squares, streets and buildings as well as hidden courtyards and alleyways. A range of activities will take place in the heart of Rotterdam during the first two weeks of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. 

HIDDEN LOCATIONS

The Lijnbaan area is internationally renowned as a highlight of the post-war reconstruction period. At the same time, there are many hidden locations in this area that are hardly ever used. ZigZagCity welcomes you to the beaten track but also invites you to explore the locations that often remain unnoticed. The programme of ZigZagCity is an alternative travel guide. 

HISTORY AND FUTURE

This festival focuses on the history and the future of the Lijnbaan area with stories and journeys. Making use of the local features, visual artists and architects show the potential of these hidden places. A public garden is transformed into a lush oasis in the city, an alleyway is turned into a virtual nature trail and a courtyard becomes a DIY pavilion. While zigzagging through the city centre you will see Rotterdam like you’ve never seen it before.

Happy Sant Jordi to everyone! Today is a special day in Catalunya, one of my favourite traditions. I'm participating in a collective exhibition at Cosmo Gallery in Barcelona with this illustration.

Here's some wiki info about this special day:

La Diada de Sant Jordi (Catalan pronunciation: [ɫə ðiˈaðə ðə ˈsaɲ ˈʒɔrði], Saint George's Day), also known as El dia de la Rosa (The Day of the Rose) or El dia del Llibre (The Day of the Book) is a Catalan holiday held on 23 April, with similarities to Valentine's Day and some unique twists that reflect the antiquity of the celebrations. The main event is the exchange of gifts between sweethearts, loved ones and colleagues. Historically, men gave women roses, and women gave men a book to celebrate the occasion—"a rose for love and a book forever." In modern times, the mutual exchange of books is also customary. Roses have been associated with this day since medieval times, but the giving of books is a more recent tradition originating in 1923, when a bookseller started to promote the holiday as a way to commemorate the nearly simultaneous deaths of Miguel Cervantesand William Shakespeare on 23 April 1616. Barcelona is the publishing capital of both Catalan and Spanish languages and the combination of love and literacy was quickly adopted.

In Barcelona's most visited street, La Rambla, and all over Catalonia, thousands of stands of roses and makeshift bookstalls are hastily set up for the occasion. By the end of the day, some four million roses and 800,000 books will have been purchased. Most women will carry a rose in hand, and half of the total yearly book sales in Catalonia take place on this occasion.

The sardana, the national dance of Catalonia, is performed throughout the day in the Plaça Sant Jaume in Barcelona. Many book stores and cafes host readings by authors (including 24-hour marathon readings of Cervantes' "Don Quixote"). Street performers and musicians in public squares add to the day's atmosphere.

23 April is also the only day of the year when the Palau de la Generalitat, Barcelona's principal government building, is open to the public. The interior is decorated with roses to honour Saint George.

Catalonia exported its tradition of the book and the rose to the rest of the world. In 1995, the UNESCO adopted 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day.

"The Future of Artist Books" at PrintRoom.

Last Friday I attended this talk at PrintRoom about artist books. It was interesting to hear the stories of the four Dutch artists who were presenting their work. The artists: Delphine Bedel, Erica Overmeer,  Elisabeth Tonnard and Mariken Wessels.

‘The Future of Artist Books’ is a series of talks, workshops and events aiming to present the most innovative publishing projects by artists and designer’s working with photography, text, printed matter and e-publishing. The artist book is a medium central to contemporary artistic practice. The artists / publishers will present their recent editions, and discuss new modes of production, collaborative practices and distribution, from print on demand, serial editions to education projects, as well as their economical models.

The event happened thanks to Karin de Jong, who is in charge of PrintRoom.

Charlotte Wooning is the designer of the beautiful necklace Phil got me for my birthday last year. She was selling her stuff at a fashion fair last Sunday and this ring was on offer. Mine!!

Rotterdam station.

The new Rotterdam station is coming along nicely. Since I moved to The Netherlands it's been under construction. It seemed like a never- ending process. But now I'm starting to see the end of it. When it's finished, I think it's going to change the whole appearance of the city center.

Tia in Uncle Buck.

As a little girl, I watched the movie "Uncle Buck" (1989) several times (we had it in VHS). I quite liked the styling of this character, the teenager daughter named Tia Russel (played by the actress Juan Louisa Kelly, who is now looking very different to this, google her). The costume designer is Marylin Vance-Straker, so it's thanks to her that this character looks so cool in every shot.

Cross processing (sometimes abbreviated to Xpro) is the procedure of deliberately processing photographic film in a chemical solution intended for a different type of film. The effect was discovered independently by many different photographers often by mistake in the days of C-22 and E-4. 

In this case what happened:


Processing positive color reversal film in C-41 chemicals, resulting in a negative image on a colorless base.

The Mesh Print Club had the opening for their stunning and spacey new place! No decent photos were taken, sorry. I will be joining the club very soon. Can't wait to start screen printing again! I've missed it!
