Hello, Mars.

Look at that little brick-red star to the far left of the moon. That's Mars, that is.

I cropped my photo for a bit of a closer look.

Yesterday somebody announced on a social media network (guess which one) that the red tinted star to the left of the moon was Mars. I got so (unexpectedly) excited when I saw it. It was clearly redder than the rest of the stars and I would even say it twinkled a different kind of shine than the rest. I took these pictures from my window. To the naked eye Mars looked more like a star than these photos. I was delighted when I downloaded them onto my computer. That is clearly not just any star!

I just read on Wikipedia that the closest approach of Mars to our planet "will occur on March 3, 2012 at a distance of about 100 million km."

Did you know (I didn't until now) that Mars has the tallest known mountain in the Solar System, the Olympus Mons.

It is 22 km high, almost 3 times as tall as Mount Everest.

As part as the Rotterdam Film Festival, Amy had live skype sessions with her mum at WORM. In Amy's words:

On Feb 2nd WORM hosts a night revolving around one of Ai Wei Wei's latest films in the IFFR program. The event will be a 'full-on Chinese meatspace-rip a la fake' extravaganza in typical Hajo style. Quite possibly owing to my Chinese genetics, I have been invited to 'something'.

So here it is…..
Streamed live from Australia, my mum and I will form the TLANSATLANTIC OLACLE MUM act. (Hopefully) Divined in the twilight zone of the wheelchair elevator shaft, mummy Ling Qing aka Maria will calculate the lucky visitor's fate while I interpret it. So please come along, if not for your destiny, at least swing by to enjoy some phonetical karaoke in one hand and eat some dim sum in the other!

It was a fun night, with karaoke, cumbia, Chinese decorations and silliness.

If you can't wait until summer to visit Rotterdam, the Film Festival is definitely the best time of the cold part of the year to come and visit.

I didn't take any photos of Sheila Hicks' installation at the Boijmans, so these are just found on google. I loved her work and recommend a visit if you're in town, stunning little compositions with all sort of textures and unexpected objects woven into the fabric (feathers and bones amongst others).

Since the 1960's, Sheila Hicks (1934), trained in the modernistic Bauhaus tradition, has a unique way of mixing autonomous art with the traditional craft of weaving. She makes 'paintless paintings' - also called textile graffiti - as well as architectural installations. In Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Hicks presents a selection of small woven works (minimes) she made as some kind of diary notes over the past fifty years. These works of art are created on a home-made manual loom that is not bigger than a canvas stretcher. The designs depend on her inspiration at the time. As well as these minimes, some parts of her sketchbooks, a few photographs and other sources of inspiration are also on display.

This chandelier is called "Fragile Future II", and was one of my favourite pieces of the exhibition. It's designed by Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta. It's made of LED lights and dandelion seedlings. LED lights don't warm
up when lit, so they allow this delicate design to work. Beautiful!

In the morning of 14 may 1940, a total of 90 bombers from squadron KG 45 dropped their full load of bombs on Rotterdam. Between 800-900 people were killed and 70.000 homeless. Aprox.25.000 homes,24 churches,2320 stores, 775 warehouses and 62 schools were destroyed.

When I was little I would get jealous of the film characters because the sounds that came from simple actions was so loud and crisp. I wanted that sound for my actions too. I remember feeling specially jealous of the sound that came from walking on gravel. I wondered why such sounds could only be heard on tv or on the radio.

Then, one Christmas, I got "My First Sony" and understood what a microphone was.

I was trying out the macro option on my camera for filming. I can't control it very much but I think it's quite good. But what I liked more was the sound of my pen on the paper. Sounds like breathing. Or slow chewing.

One of my favourite sounds is the sound of a horse chewing.

I'm now finished with my Dutch course and I'm officially on level 3. On my certificate it says that this level is high enough to speak with the natives, to make appointments and arrangements. I can make short sentences without mistakes and use standard expressions. Under pressure (mostly emotional) I will make lots of mistakes, but I can still communicate. I can understand the radio and tv-shows and specific information as long as the speaking tempo is not too fast. I can also read texts written for the general public and write standard texts for every day life, for my studies and for work.

Now I'm only missing the courage to do all those things outside the classroom!

I'm very proud of my friend Andrea Bauzà in Puerto Rico who was involved in this project of getting a dark
street illuminated in front of the puerto rican train station Río Piedras. Together with the team of Urbano Activo they collected signatures and temporarily illuminated the street with all sorts of objects, making it look beautiful! Thanks to their initiative the city hall surprised them with their quick reaction, and now this street
has the light it deserves.

This design by Beaureau MEST is a way of reflecting the crisis, they say. I'm so tired of that word but I think it's great that they found a greener, more sustainable way of lighting up the city for Christmas (this should not depend on an economic crisis, I think). The containers used are recycled (reused) and I find the light they emit is beautiful!

I thought Lars Von Trier's latest movie was amazing. Normally, end of the world movies make

me feel very scared, but this one gave me a strange, peaceful kind of sadness. I could say it

maybe even got me into a bit of a melancholic state.

Even if you don't really like Lars Von Trier I would recommend it just to see Kirsten Dunst's

fabulous acting.

One thing I should get straight in my head is that it is useless to worry about something as big as

the end of the world. It is also useless to worry in general. Do animals worry?

Helen and I went to visit L'ANTIQUARI, Tapes de mercat. I have been working on their
house style for the past couple of months. It was satisfying to see the result. It has turned out
to be a big illustration project that helps me realize what I really enjoy doing at work.
Here Gabriel and I are standing in front of a glass window covered in the vinyls I designed.
We got treated as VIPs and enjoyed an amazing meal. The perks of working for an excellent chef! Gracias Gabriel!

"Sleepy you" - by Will Vincent

Repeated occurrences in the a.m are leading me to conclude that the most selfish state a person's brain can reside in is 'sleepy you'.

'Sleepy you' is a proper little git. Over the past few weeks he's figured out how to operate my body to a standard sufficient to get up, get out of bed, disable any given number of alarmed devices, get back into bed and resume his work without disturbing any of his infinitely more productive colleagues.

Even 'drunken you' retains more sensibility about his character. Mebs best not go to the after hours discotheque, mebs that'll impede on tomorrow's planned activities, mebs play it safe and call it a night.

'Sleepy you' couldn't care less. Why don't we just shit everyone else off and lay here for five ten twenty minutes longer? But of course of course of course. Consequence? What consequence. We'll both be warm and unconscious together, that's a much better plan isn't it.

Jannetje had a massive pumpkin at home, so we had to use it up.

She made yummy pumpkin risotto and I made these pumpkin and sesame mini pancakes.

I do recommend them.

- 8 oz. pumpkin (peeled and seeded)
- 2 cups glutinous rice flour (mochi flour)
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup sesame seeds (white, black or combination of both)
- Vegetable oil for frying
- Peel and remove the seeds from the pumpkin, then cut it into about 2-inch squares. Place the pumpkin on a plate and steam over boiling water for 20 minutes or until it is completely soft. Remove from the steamer and drain any access water from the plate.
- Place the pumpkin in a medium mixing bowl and add the glutinous rice flour and sugar while still hot. Mix the ingredients together well until a smooth dough is formed. Divide the dough into 16 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and press down to form a disk of about three inches in diameter and about 1/4 inch thick. In a shallow bowl spread the sesame seeds. Coat the pumpkin pancakes completely with sesame seeds by patting the dough down onto the seeds.
- Heat about 1/4 inch of vegetable oil in a medium (10 inches diameter) frying pan over medium heat. When the oil reaches about 300 F place eight of the pancakes onto the frying pan and fry for three to four minutes or until the side is golden brown. Flip the disk and brown the other side for three or four minutes. Remove the pancakes from the pan and place them on a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Repeat the frying with the rest of the pancakes.
- Serve the pancakes while they are still hot.

I always take more pleasure in liking something than in disliking something. That’s not to say there aren’t some things that deserve to be liked and some things that deserved to be disliked, but I’m never fond of disliking something.
The lesson I’ve learned is to be wary of those who are. The ones who seem to think that being critical is the same as having good taste. Those people almost never have good taste, so their opinions don’t matter.
There’s no particular sophistication required to be a critic. We know this, because children often dislike foods they learn to love as adults.
So, even if what you’ve done isn’t so great, just remember that those who can’t say so with grace, those who seem to take pride in criticizing you, their opinions don’t matter. It may very well be that you’ve created a masterpiece, and they’re just children.
If you can learn to be a fair judge of yourself, you won’t feel the need to rely on other people’s opinions.

Here you have a little sneak peak of the menu boards for the project I'm doing the house style for, L'Antiquari, tapes de mercat, a nice tapas restaurant in Lleida. It's opening very soon. I went to see the boards being laser cut at Snijlab, here in Rotterdam, where all sorts can be cut: wood, plastic, cardboard and even fabric! For 1€ a minute you can have your own design cut (+ material cost). Awesome!!
